Farm-in-the-Village is a supervised 14,000 square foot urban farm located at 3879 Bloor Street W in Etobicoke. (Corner of Bloor and Acorn). The purpose of this community based urban garden is to gather community members, at-risk youth and students together to grow 10,000 pounds of fresh organic vegetables for our local food bank.
Urban Agriculture is an excellent way to connect kids to the earth and the environment. At the same time, the process helps shed light on the important local social issues of hunger and food security. Youth will learn about horticulture and proper growing techniques in the process and gain valuable community service hours.
One Village Care Initiative is offering this project to students after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3-6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am-2 pm. Planting runs until early June and stewardship runs all summer.
Environmental stewardship, food security, job training, youth empowerment and proper nutrition are the central focus of this dynamic urban agriculture initiative. It starts in the schoolyard and expands to transform the community.
